Our Bamboo Background
Bob and Vikki Dimattia operate Pura Vida Tropicals Nursery, a Limited Liability Corporation, on one acre in Vista, California. The nursery is lovingly run by the family and kept to a manageable, hands-on scale, which accounts for the high quality of plants offered for sale and the high level of customer service offered to those who enter our gates. We operate on an appointment-only basis so that we may best serve our clients – offering advice and plant choices specific to each customer’s needs.
If you wish to visit us, just call Bob at 760-519-0397. He will be happy to escort you through our world of bamboo, palms and exotic plants. Pura Vida Tropicals is doubly blessed with the nurturing hands of Bob Dimattia and a physical location that has a microclimate perfect for growing plants.
Bob started his nursery career first as an avid gardener and a hobbyist and collector of bamboo in 1977. He knew bamboo was a foundation of life for many cultures in other parts of the world, but when the local Asian community approached him and asked to be allowed to harvest bamboo shoots for their dinner table he realized that bamboo was a plant whose value extended to ALL parts of the world. This inspired Bob to further devote himself to learning about bamboo and he found that what he once considered just a beautiful, useful plant was so much more than that. He subsequently became active in the American Bamboo Society, Southern California Chapter and continues to volunteer and offer his services for their projects. He has been honored for his services with a Lifetime Membership.
Bob’s knowledge has grown over the past 30 years to the point where he is sought after to give lectures and demonstrations at garden clubs, the San Diego Horticultural Society events, and many other venues. Pura Vida Tropicals is home to over 100 species of bamboo (many of them rare, hard to find giant timber), 150 species of palms and many varieties of ginger, anthuriums, guavas, and other exotic tropicals.
A visit to Pura Vida Tropicals is a delight. Walking through mature stands of bamboo is an awesome experience. Bamboo is also on display as fencing and structures.
